with Kermit Davis,
Middle Tennessee State University Head Men's Basketball Coach;

2017 Conference USA Coach of the Year (sixth overall Coach of the Year honor, including back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year awards in 2012-13)

With over 200 + career wins at Middle Tennessee State, Kermitt Davis has developed a well-balanced scoring offense. In this presentation, Coach Davis will show you how to push it early on offense for quick baskets versus man-to-man or zone defenses.

This up-tempo offensive system places a premium on great spacing and playing inside-out with both the dribble and the pass. You will learn the concepts and drills needed to develop this style of play with your team. Drills that develop the dribble penetration game and transition ball screen offense are also shown.

Additionally, Coach Davis will teach you how his teams attack zone offenses in transition, and also demonstrate several set plays MTSU runs in their half court offense through the Floppy and Motion series.

Dribble Penetration

Teams that are looking to score early and play transition basketball must focus on floor spacing and utilize drive and kick principles. Coach Davis uses whiteboard diagrams and on-court demonstrators to show proper spacing in the half court that will force long closeouts from defenders, allowing you to stick with the philosophy of getting the best shot for your players.

With the emphasis on valuing the basketball, Coach Davis teaches the importance of a shot fake to keep your defender on their heels. The Shot Fake & Drive drill will show your players the passing options that are created off paint touches. A special emphasis is placed on incorporating the post into the drive and kick game through spacing off penetration and post ups.

Fast Break Scoring

Coach Davis diagrams his fast break system that heavily involves ball screens in transition. In addition to explaining the basic offense, you will learn three plays that are used on the run to challenge defenses. Five breakdown drills demonstrate these concepts on the court so you can see how players use drag screens and double drag screens.

The 5 Action is a fantastic quick hitter that tries to preoccupy defenders in screening actions before running into a high ball screen. The 3-on-0 Snap Shots drill breaks down Middle Tennessee's Snap action that can be used to free up a screener in the pick & roll from various locations on the court.

Zone Offense

Learn how to attack a zone defense early with transition ball screens before flowing into a motion offense. In addition to seeing the motion offense in action, you will also get three set plays that you can use to attack zones in half court situations or on baseline inbound plays.

Half Court Sets

Coach Davis has his players rehearse set plays from their "Floppy" and "Motion" series. The team demonstrates multiple plays out of Floppy, which has guards cross under the rim to run off down screens for scoring opportunities. You will also see several variations of the Motion series, which sends guards off screens at the elbows and blocks to find ways to score.

Coach Davis' instruction is great because it breaks down actions into steps and teaching instructions with breakdown drills that you can implement right away in your practices.
