Mary Wise and her team of coaches at the University of Florida provide a court-side seat to the first three practices of their 2011-12 season. Watch as they introduce their system and vocabulary to the new team members and refresh those concepts with the returning athletes in a live practice setting. Through all three practices, the drills and teaching are upbeat and develop the Florida system of play in an incremental, step-by-step approach.

Day 1:

  • See the benefits of incorporating floor moves in your practice
  • Teach the eye sequence necessary to be in the right spot to make a play
  • Learn a variety of sets and the necessary timing needed to execute each

In the first practice of Day 1, Coach Wise and her staff jump right in with partner drills that work on individual and specific defensive moves. The day progresses into an area that all coaches talk about: Communication. Coach Wise does a great job of incorporating this skill in her 4 vs. 4 drill. She creates a situation that forces the players to communicate until it becomes a habit. The players then work on serve and serve receive, an area that all coaches know is necessary in order to have a successful season.

Practice 2 of Day 1 starts with a core workout on the gym floor. This part of practice focuses on the offense and defense at the net. The players then move into an eye sequence segment. Seeing and processing what is happening on the other side of the net. Then the hitters are introduced to the different sets (location, tempo, angles to attack) found in the Gators offensive system. The day ends with a "dig or die" drill that emphasizes getting a hand on all balls on defense.

Day 2:

  • Learn the proper way to make a good defensive read and a quality dig
  • Learn the Yes or No Swing Drill to teach your players when to go for the big hit and when to turn a bad ball into a quality swing
  • Improve your passing accuracy with footwork and platform angles

The first practice of Day 2 focuses on defense and defensive reads. A lot of digging and digging concepts are introduced, with the team breaking into smalls groups to really focus on individual technique. Outside hitters work on passing from the left side of the court and getting into their hitting route. At the end of practice the team goes through the 4 vs. 4 Communication Drill.

The second practice focuses on passing and serve receive. A lot of instruction is given on how to pass by moving the feet, seeing the ball's trajectory from the server before it crosses the net and creating the perfect angle to target. Also, in this practice the Yes or No Swing Drill is introduced. A great drill to teach your players when to go for the big hit and when to turn a bad ball into a quality swing.

Each drill builds on the previous drill and progressively integrates the communication elements with the skills.

Day 3:

  • Learn the defensive scheme and system that has propelled the Gators to success
  • Learn different 6 vs. 6 drills with various scoring options to bring a certain level of focus to the practice session
  • Get different serving drills to develop aggressive and accurate serves

Day 3 starts with serving. All players rotate through three courts, with each court having its own focus. Team defense is introduced with a lot of instruction and guidance from the Gator staff. The defensive system is established with each player's responsibilities and then the team is put into various team defensive drills where coaches give a lot of feedback based on the situation. In this practice the team is place in 6 vs. 6 team drills with different scoring methods to emphasize a certain focus. This is a great way to get players to put themselves in better position to be successful.
