with Tod Kowalczyk, University of Toledo Head Coach;
2014 MAC regular season champions, led Toledo to a school-record 27 wins in 2014.

Most teams struggle against zone defenses because players become passive passers and they settle for jump shots. Tod Kowalczyk shows how to make sure these things don't happen. "Attacking" the zone is his key to success. During the presentation Coach Kowalczyk shows a variety of ways that his teams "Attack" the zone. Through motion offenses and set plays he exposes the weaknesses in the zone. The plays and offenses that he shows are also incredibly easy to implement and can work at any level. Also included in the video are two fantastic ball security drills that will ensure your team doesn't easily give the ball to the other team.

The video begins with four ball security drills that teach your players to value each possession, "Be Boss with the Ball," and pass and cut with intensity and quickness. Perfect Passing and the 60 Pass Drill both force the players to execute smart passes while staying aggressive. Turnover ratio almost always determines the outcome of a game. By implementing these drills, Coach Kowalczyk has had tremendous success in his programs. The 60 Pass Drill is a great competitive drill that gets the players active and excited about doing things right.

The second portion of the video addresses zone offense. Coach Kowalczyk believes that it is essential to "attack" the zone instead of settling. Some key concepts that he covers in the demonstration are always finding a way to get the ball to the high post, not settling for jump shots and using ball screens to create opportunities for your team.

There are three different ways to play offense: Continuity, motion, or set plays. Coach Kowalczyk runs all three kinds against zone defenses.

  • "White" Zone Offense - A continuity offense with four different scoring actions. Discover how post players can screen a zone and look to roll for scoring opportunities around the rim and in the paint.
  • Zone Attack - A 4-Out 1-In motion set up. As the ball moves, perimeter players must use effective cuts as your post player draws on high post touches creating numerous scoring opportunities against any zone defense.
  • Set Plays versus a zone - Coach Kowalczyk provides five different set plays against a zone. He demonstrates how to blend your set plays into your zone motion offense.

The demonstrations of the motion offense and the set plays really help to clarify how he has been able to help his team have success verses zone defenses. A great piece of the instruction from this section comes when the ball gets in the short corner. He demonstrates how to create two different short corner actions based on the point guard cutting or the wings cutting through the zone. The action shown not only presents two great looks near the hoop, but also shows how to get a wide open shot when the ball is reversed. Coach also demonstrates five set plays vs. the 2-3 zone that will open up both a wide open 3-point shot or a low post look.

Zone Defenses are used to disrupt normal basketball action, force outside shots and give less talented teams a chance. Attack the zone with ferocity and beat up your opponents with the offenses and set plays included in this presentation. If you didn't know how to get multiple great looks verses a zone in the past, you will now.
